So I'm retired right? And what would possess me to even think about substitute teaching? but here I am involved with substitute teaching, and it's been enjoyable - so far.
So - there's an opening on December 18th and I sign on for the day - what's the worst that could happen? After I sign on for the job I look at the calendar - oh no! it's two days before the school break for Christmas. Nah - I can handle this he thinks smugly to himself. Yeah, right.
So - first class of the day, second class, third class, all goes OK - are the kids wound up? you bet but they aren't kicking my butt (yet). By the fourth class I'm detecting a peculiar odor in the air. Hmmm ... let's see. 7th graders, boys and girls - hmmmm, and wondering why they are ALL so hyper.
Bang - slaps himself in the forehead remembering Bio 101 and now recognizes that odor - the air is heavy with pheromones from maturing boys and girls. No wonder they have a hard time keeping it together some days!
It's also a wonder the teachers keep it together as well. By the 5th period of the day with the pheromones heavy in the air and the general overall hightened level of excitement from the students, it was a challenge!
The day ended well and the smell of fresh air! Awesome!
So - general conclusion from the experience: one or two pubescent kids together - the odor cannot be detected; a whole herd of them together, prior to Christmas break - pray for the teachers!
Just wondering - should Febreze be standard issue for classrooms?
